Blanc ?, ou pas Blanc ? ; that is the question !

DERIVATION. The older idea was that the name was based on a supposed Celtic word equivalent to Latin albus 'white', the sense being 'white land', that is with reference to the white cliffs of Kent as seen from the Continent. Holder I. 83 adopted this, but modern specialists think that no such word existed in Celtic. Williams in BBCS, VI (1931-33), 134, drew attention to medieval Welsh elfydd 'world, land', derived from a British stem *albio-. A meaning 'the land, the country' given by its own inhabitants is perfectly acceptable. Dottin LG 95 mentions a Gaulish divinity Mars Albiorix 'king of the world'. Pliny (NH IV, III) notes the tribe of the Albiones, a people of Hispania Tarraconensis in the area of the Navia river (Lugo and Oviedo, Spain); the existence of this tribe may have induced confusion into Avienius's reference to Britain as insula Albionum: see C. F. C. Hawkes, Pytheas : Europe and the Greek Explorers (Oxford, 1977), 17-22.
The name was recalled by Bede (I,I): Britannia Oceani insula, cui quondam Albion nomen fuit, a reference evidently taken from Pliny, whose work he knew. The name was obsolete by Pliny's time, but such was its authority that it continued in the Greek tradition; Avienius's mention depends upon very ancient sources and not on any currency contemporary with his work. See further Chapter II, p. 39. The name continued strongly in Irish tradition : in Irish and in Gaelic up to the twelfth century, Alba (genitive Albu, Albou) was the regular name for the region of Scot.
